Steven Kyajohnian, known as “Coach K” , was a graduate of Lunenburg HS in 1974. After serving in the military and graduating from Bridgewater State University in 1983, Steven returned to his alma mater to see his former track coach, HOF inductee, Dick Mulligan. That’s when he was offered and took the indoor track coaching position, which carried over into the spring track position in 1984. Later ,Steve became a Physical Education teacher at the elementary level and retired from teaching in 2017, but continues coaching after 39 years. The MSTCA awarded Steve CMASS COY, both in 2006 and 2011 and also awarded the girls and boy’s teams the states‘ Sportsmanship Award in 2013. Since 1983 the girls indoor team has an overall record of 246-41, with 22 league championships, 5 District Div. 2 championships, 8 league/district relay championships and 2 State Div. 5 relay runner-up championships. Since 1984, his girls outdoor teams have an overall record of 230-32 and their record since 1990 is 190-6 ,with 28 league championships, 15 district championships, & 17 district relay championships. One of the team’s highlights was when they were on Channel 5’s “High Five” with Mike Lynch, for 100 dual meet wins in a row. The girls team had a GPA of “92”, an accomplishment they were very proud of. Coach K attributes all the success with having great student athletes and families and a core of great assistant coaches , with whom he shares all of his accolades .Two quotes from Steve, “you’re only as good as your assistants“, and ”wins and championships aside, it’s always been about the student athletes having fun and sharing the passion I have for the sport of track and field .“
