Bob MAGUIRE has tremendous success as a cross country, indoor and outdoor coach at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. His teams won numerous league, state class, and all-state championships to continue the long track tradition of our high schools. Some of the many coaching accomplishments include: 155 cross country wins in 15 cross country league championships and two All-State championships. In track Bob’s teams acquired 56 wins, six league championships, two Division 1 class championships and All State championships! In 1987, CRLS accomplished the elusive “triple crown.” The teams won the state, class, and allstate meets in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. It was the first time in state history. Longtime coach Frank McCarthy remarks, “Bob had an abundance of qualities that made him a great coach. He was renowned for his intense “big meet” preparation and his innate ability to motivate his athletes, particularly modifying workouts to their individual needs. As the season progressed under Bob, his focus was always centered on championship meets. Peaking athletes is difficult to do in any sport, but Bob had a gift for making sure his athletes were primed for the “big events.” He always said that the bigger the meet, the better they run. This is so evident in the countless championship teams he coached.
