William Footrick

Gardner

Footrick, a 1932 Springfield College graduate, coached cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field at UMass from 1954-1968 where he also served as an associate professor of physical education. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1984 and to the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991. Footrick was well known in central Massachusetts having coached swimming, track, football, basketball, cross country, wrestling, and gymnastics at Gardner High School and served as director of health and physical education in the Gardner school system. For his dedication in coaching, he received the NCAA Coaches Association Award for more than 25 years devotion to the development of track and field competition and service to the nation's youth. An outstanding javelin thrower during his collegiate days at Springfield College, Footrick ranked as high as eighth nationally and set the New England Intercollegiate A.A.A. meet record and Brown University field record with his mark of 207-feet, seven-and-1/8 inches. That marked earned him a trip to the Eastern Sectional Olympic Tryouts where he took second to qualify for the semifinal Olympic Tryouts at Stanford University.
