Mike’s career at Hopkinton could be regarded as a small school dynasty. The twenty-seven year veteran has built a powerhouse program, highlighted by recent dominance in track, and last year’s strong showing in the Hall of Fame balloting vaulting him to the top of this year’s class. Described as a “coach for all students” by his principal, Mr. Scanlon is a beloved figure in his school who urges his athletes to represent their community with pride and dignity. And have they ever! The accomplishments are truly remarkable , beginning with a Division IV spring title in 1999 that led to 7 in a row, a Division IV indoor 2000 crown leading to 4 more in this decade, along with the astounding total of 7 All-State crowns during this period. Additionally, Mike’s girls have won 8 class relay championships and numerous Tri-Valley League titles, further demonstrating his team concept for success. Also, as Hopkinton’s cross country coach, he has led his squats to 2 state division titles and 8 Tri-Valley league crowns. In addition to his outstanding coaching success, Mr. Scanlon has organized road races in Hopkinton to raise funds for reading programs, assisted fellow inductee Kevin Murphy raising money for Dana Faber, and served as clinician at the MSTCA Do-It Clinic. He credits Northeastern University mentorIrwin Cohen for giving him his start in coaching. Currently the Science Department Coordinator at Hopkinton High School, Coach Scanlon is looking forward to his retirement in June 2006.
