Dick Dow

Acton-Boxboro

This year’s Veteran’s Committee recipient is a true pillar in MSTCA history. An early Executive Board member in the Association, Dick actually started the Hall Of Fame in 1973. He believes that his dad Joe Carey, an MSTCA Hall of Famer himself, were the real inspirations for his career in education and coaching. This journey started in 1956 at Boston Technical, took him to Fitchburg State where he was captain his senior year, then to his first teaching job at Canton High, where George King (yet another Hall of Famer) gave him his first coaching job. Then it was onto East Bridgewater until a job opened up at Acton-Boxborofor a teacher- coach and the rest if teacher Mr. Dow’s eighteen years at A-B were nothing short of sensational with an overall record of 284-34. Dick’s team won 15 Dual County League titles, 3 EMASS relay championships, two spring track class crowns and had 12 undefeated seasons. Amazing, considering there wasn't even a cross country program thee until Dick convinced the Principal to let him start him! A member of the A-B Colonials Hall of Fame, Dick’s achievements positively influenced many student athletes, and he stacks up with the all-time greats there. Colleague, Tony Ammendolia, nominated Dick because of his “tireless efforts of track” at all levels. He is also well known for college coaching at Holy Cross and Northeastern, and was presented a 25 years of service award from the IC4A Track Coaches Association. In Dick’s own words describing his coaching career, “It was a good time, and I was inspired by all of them to do as much as I could for each of them.” Dick and his wife, Rosemary, currently reside in New Bern, North Carolina.
