George Rose

Notre Dame Academy

Coach Rose enters the Hall as one of the greatest girls distance coaches in Massachusetts history. From 1981 to 1989, his incredible energy, enthusiasm, and innovative methods turned Notre Dame (Hingham) from a little known track team to a statewide powerhouse. In fact, the program became so strong that the field won an amazing seven straight EMASS Divisional crowns in the early 80’s, at the time an all-time record. He became the initial NDA coach to ever win a State Championship in any sport in 1982, and his girl’s teams then defended their title for an unbelievable three consecutive years from 1983-1985, a record still unmatched! A two time Boston Globe Coach of the Year, George ran for Weymouth South in the 70’s where he was a distance ace and EMASS champ. Following his tenure at NDA, he moved on to Sacred Heart (Kingston) in 2001 and immediately developed a program that dominated the Mayflower League with only 2 losses in his first 7 years. Referred to by our Hall of Famer colleague Bill O'Connor as an “encyclopedia of running”, Coach Rose is renowned for his knowledge of distance running, training, and history of the sport. He enters the Hall as the only member who have coached and taught in Kenya, and is widely respected for his humanitarian work organizing food drives, clothing drives, and raising money for third world countries.
