Kevin Maloney

Blackstone Millville Regional

Coach Kevin Maloney’s coaching career at Blackstone-Milliville Regional spanned 42 years beginning with the 1974-75 school year and ending in the 2015-2016 school year. During that time he coached girl’s track for 12 seasons, boy’s track for 21 seasons, indoor track for 12 seasons and cross-country for 39 seasons. His teams and athletes earned many championships over those years, with the cross-country team being perhaps the most noteworthy. When he took over that team in 1977 they were already 38-0 from the previous three seasons, and over the next sixteen years they remained undefeated and added another 227 victories in-a-row and increased their winning streak to 265-0, which broke the previous National Record of 250-0 for the longest winning streak in the history of the sport. During those years the team had many highlights with 9 Central MA State Championship teams and 8 individual champions. Several team members earned multiple All-State honors with two doing so three times, Adam Tenerowicz and Jeff Hill, who both were also State Runner-up as seniors. The team also won over two dozen invitational championships during his tenure. His track teams, first the girls and then the boys, added another 8 Central MA Class Championships for BMR with many individuals earning Central MA and All-State honors. Two of the best, Jennifer Lanctot who went on to Boston University and Frank Powers who ran at Dartmouth, went on to win National mile and 10k championships, respectively. Coach Maloney worked at BMR as a guidance counselor for 35 years, and upon retiring in 2009 he continued to coach the cross-country team for another 7 seasons. And a testament to his commitment to his team was that he continued to coach even when he and his wife moved three hours away to NH in his final season. The commute was a long won which he did by driving to Blackstone on Tuesday mornings and returning to NH on Saturday afternoons. That passion for coaching and his commitment to his athletes was always evident, and many of those individual relationships have continued through the years even though for many their last season together was literally decades ago. In 2014 BMR honored him by naming the track at the school after him and inducted him into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. And in retirement he finished his coaching career as a full-time volunteer coach for four more track seasons in Florida. Today he continues to follow the sports of track and cross-country as a fan!
