Biography
"Butter" becomes the initial coach from David Prouty to be inducted to a Massachusetts Hall of Fame. A familiar face as an official, computer guru, and coach, Charlie has been a Central Mass fixture for the last thirty years. As head track coach from 1973 outdoors and since 1978 indoors, there have been 14 SWCL league championships and two district championships. The Panthers totally dominated from 1991-1994 when they compiled four straight undefeated seasons. Additionally, "Butter" took on responsibility for Cross Country in 1989 and his female harriers ran to the SWCL crown as early as 1990. His entire tenure will be remembered as overwhelmingly successful. But it's not about the wins and losses for this CMass icon, it's about promoting and administrating our sport. Among Coach Butterfield's accomplishments are being founder and Director of the Central Mass Suburban Indoor league, member of the MIAA District E Track and Field Games Committee, Meet Director for District E and State Tournaments, and a contributing member of the local, state, and national Officials Associations. In his spare time, Charles is the state Director of track and field for the acclaimed Bay State Games. Whew! Truly, a humble man, "Butter" is most proud of his son lan, a physical education teacher and indoor and outdoor boys track coach at Shrewsbury High. Charlie's wife Judith, who he admits "hates track and loves football", has been a great inspiration to him through the years of coaching. Athletic Director Paul Archambeault of David Prouty described Coach Butterfield with these words - "professionalism", "extremely admirable work ethic" "dedicated", and "tireless" • The teacher, coach, official, and union president revered in Central Mass is now enjoying his retirement and is welcomed into our Hall of Fame.
