The high school track world lost a giant of a man last spring and tonight we honor Coach O’Sullivan by enshrining him in the MSTCA Hall of Fame. Coach “O”, as he is known, gave valuable lessons to his uncanny ability to turn them, not only into fine runners, but also into fine men. Colleague Rob Benedetto stated to us that, “He always wanted the best for his athletes, and they knew that Coach “O” would accept nothing less than their best.” For twenty-seven years, Central Catholic was a Class B powerhouse under his direction, as proven by coach “O’s” astounding 478 victories in cross country, indoor track and spring track. Peter was twice chosen as Boston Globe Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1999. However, it was not the 33 year titles, nor the indoor class titles in 1995, 2004, and 2005, nor the outdoor track streak of class championships from 2001-2005 that is Peter’s legacy. Quite simply, it was his stature as a pillar in the Lawrence Central Catholic High School community. Coach O’Sullivan built a tradition covering three decades and gave hundreds of boys important lessons not just about running but more about life. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him as a coach and mentor of student athletes.
