St. John’s

Gerry began his coaching career in spring of 1973 at St. John’s (S) assisting his high school coach Brother Joseph Fintan Curran. That fall, he took over the head coaching role of the indoor track team which he guided for seventeen seasons. His indoor teams achieved a record of 129-20-1, winning eight league crowns and six District E Indoor invitational titles, while finishing in the top five at the indoor state meet on five occasions. His outdoor teams posted a record of 48-11, winning fire conference titles and one MIAA Central Sectional crown. From 1978 to 1983 Gerry served as coach of the girls track team at Marlborough High. Gerry’s first retirement from coaching occurred in 1990 when he accepted a job as Principal in the Worcester Public Schools. Upon retiring from Worcester, he again returned to coaching in 2007 at The College of the Holy Cross. Coach Frew also served as head coach of the boys and girls program at Worcester Academy from 2008 until 2017. Under the guidance of Coach Frew and his staff, Hilltoppers track and field athletes captured 23 individual New England titles. Now in his second retirement, he serves as Mark Murray’s assistant in cross country at St. John’s (S) working with first year runners. In addition, Gerry has been a member of the CMAA T&F Committee for District E Indoor Individual Meet and has directed it for the last 40 years.
