Bob was raised in East Boston and attended Boston English High School where he threw the javelin on the track team. He was named to the Massachusetts State Track Association Athlete Hall of Fame in 2009. He attended the University of Sothern California on a track scholarship where he threw the javelin for USC from 1959 to 1961 and was an alternate on the 1964 US Olympic track team.
