Middle Distance

In the spring of '75, Martin was the national champion in the 880, turning in a winning time of 1:51.1 in Sacramento. What's more, his time of 1:52.3 at the Massachusetts All State Meet is still a meet record after all these years. He also won the New England outdoor championship in the 880 his sophomore year, and set a national record in the 1,000 yards (2:11.4) at a state open qualifier meet. After graduating, Martin ran for Boston College and during his freshman year he won the 1976 New England championship in the mile, while setting a BC freshman record in both the mile (4:06) and 800 meters (1:47.3). He transferred to Iona and became a 5 Time First team All American. But his most impressive accomplishment may have also been his biggest disappointment. Martin was a finalist in the 800 meters at the 1980 Olympic Trials. He appeared to be in line to make the USA Olympic track and field team and run in the Games of the XXII Olympiad in Moscow. The US Boycotted the Olympics in Moscow and Martin would never get a chance to compete.
