Patty Murnane was a member of the Swampscott High School class of 1978. As a senior in cross country Patty was undefeated in dual meets, was the Northeast Conference Champion, runner-up in the Northern Area Meet, 4th in the Division 2 Class Meet, and 7th in the All State Meet. She posted personal best times in the Mile (4:47.4), 1000 yards (2:34), 880 (2:11 -relay) and 440 (58.8) displaying strength at a variety of distances. Senior year she was the Division 2-XC Champion, 1st in the D2 Mile Indoors and Outdoors, and 3rd in the New England Indoor Mile where she set her PR (4:47.4). She capped off a fantastic year with a win in the Outdoor All State Meet Mile setting a new MA High School record. Patty furthered her academic and athletic career at Penn State University. she was the #3 runner on their National Championship XC team, Captain of XC and Indoor & Outdoor Track as a senior, and posted PR’s of Mile (4:41), 1500 (4:19), 800 (2:10), and was a member of two school record setting relay teams (DMR and 4x800). Senior year she ran the 1500 in 4:17 and placed 2nd place at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway. Patty qualified for two Olympic Trials in the 1500 in 1980 (Eugene) and 1992 (New Orleans).
